Fragaria vesca. Open Pollinated. Elan Strawberry. The plant produces excellent yields of juicy, shiny, bright red strawberries from seed if started early enough in the spring. It is a popular strawberry variety, prized for fruiting in the first year from seed and continuing to produce from roughly June/July through frost. It has an intensely sweet flavor. This variety has many runners and white flowers. The flowers have a mild, strawberry-like flavor and can be sprinkled on salads or used as a garnish for drinks and desserts. It has 30 to 50% higher vitamin C than many other everbearing varieties. It is a day-neutral variety, which means it is not dependent on day length for flowering. Good shelf life. Compact enough for pots and hanging baskets, typically 8–12 " spreading runners. Suitable for containers, rock gardens, and edging plants. Kids love them. Strawberry Planting Information:

Sow seeds thinly in 8-10 weeks (in March or April) before the last frost. Sprinkle seeds thinly in soilless mix. Press seeds into moist mix and keep moist until plants emerge in 2-3 weeks. Transplant to plug trays when true leaves emerge.

Soil Requirements:

Apply mulch, grass clippings, straw, pine needles, or plastic around the base of the plant. Work the soil thoroughly before planting. They prefer moist soil. They grow best in nutrient-rich soil with a pH of 6–6.5.

Water Requirements:

Water at least 1 inch a week.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle-Gro Liquid Fertilizer every two weeks.

Harvest Tips:

When they are ready to harvest, they should be slightly firm to the touch, cut the berry off at the stem of the plant. Do not pull the berry from the stem to harvest it. Unwashed strawberries can be stored in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days.
