Used in soups, stews, and salads. Also known as Large Rouen Leek. This is a vigorous and fast growing variety. The Carentan leek came to the United States in the 1800s and became commercially available in the 1880s. Also known as Mostruoso di Carentan Leek and Improved Swiss Giant Leek. Suitable for spring and fall planting. Excellent choice for home gardens. United States Department of Agriculture, W6 14004. An 1879 heirloom variety from France.
