1966 All-America Selections Winner! 85 days. Cucurbita pepo. Open Pollinated. Gold Nugget Squash. This bush plant produces good yields of 1 to 3 lb pumpkin-shaped buttercup squash. It was originally bred by North Dakota State University as a sweet potato substitute for short-season areas. The orange flesh is very sweet and used as a substitute for sweet potatoes. It is usually steamed or baked and added to soups, stews, curries, and desserts. It keeps well, too. Plant close together, and it can be a real space saver. Also known as Golden Nugget Squash.
