Choose the sunniest and largest area in your garden. Plant 5 to 7 seeds outdoors in hills. Planting should be in early spring to mid-summer, 3 weeks after the last frost, and when the soil has warmed up to at least 70 F. Plants grow 2 ft tall and vines spread up to 10 ft.

Soil Requirements:

Requires fertile, slightly acidic soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply mulch, grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant. Add well-composted manure.

Water Requirements:

Keep soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Water well during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle-Gro Liquid Fertilizer every two weeks.

Harvest Tips:

Protect ripening pumpkins from damp ground by placing them on boards. Cut pumpkins carefully from the plants to prevent damaging the vines.

The Atlantic Giant pumpkin variety is the best variety for growing a giant pumpkin. I have grown them a few times over the past five years and I have had great results overall. In 2002 I grew a 220 pound pumpkin. This variety requires fertile, loose,  and  well  drained  soil  in  a sunny location. The plants are very fast growing and you can easily grow a 100-300 pound pumpkin! With a little extra work you can grow a 500+ pound pumpkin! For best results fertilize once a week and shade pumpkins when they reach about baseball size. I highly recomend this variety for anyone who wants to grow a GIANT pumpkin in their garden.

78 days. Helianthus annuus. Annual. Open Pollinated. Skyscraper Sunflower. This very tall plant produces heavy yields of sunflower seeds. It can grow up to 12 ft tall. It is a popular giant sunflower variety known for its impressive height and large blooms. It's an easy-to-grow annual that makes a dramatic statement in gardens. This sunflower is so tall that you will need a big ladder to reach it, and even then, you won't be able to reach the top! The yellow flowers are humongous, 14" wide by 4" thick, with orange-to-green centers. When the backs turn yellow, cut the flower, and let it dry upside down. The seeds are edible and great for roasting. Watch for the birds who love the seed at the end of the season. This plant attracts bees, butterflies, and birds. Perfect for planting along a row of fences or alongside a house or barn. Impress your neighbors by growing a giant Sunflower! Easy for kids to grow. Great for school projects. Does well in poor soil.
