Butterhead Lettuce Planting Information:

Butterhead lettuce can be grown anywhere as long as you have composted soil. Lettuce grows best if planted indoors and transplanted outdoors in early spring. Lettuce does well in composted soil. It does not do well in clay soil. Make successive plantings. Plant your seeds indoors 3 to 6 weeks before setting them outside. Lettuce will better tolerate heat if plants are well thinned and air can circulate them. Spring planting should occur as soon as the soil can be worked, and fall planting should be done around June or July. Plants grow 2 - 10" tall.

Soil Requirements:

Requires fertile sandy soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply mulch and grass clippings, or straw, around the base of the plant.

Water Requirements:

Keep soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Water well during dry and hot spells. Water in the morning only, on the side of the plants and not directly on the leaves.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle-Gro periodically.

Harvest Tips:

Pick outer leaves of butterhead lettuce, or cut the entire head about 1" above the soil. A new head may grow.
