Winter Squash Seed Planting Information:

Winter Squash need warm weather to grow. It is best to plant seeds directly in the garden. Plant your seeds after the soil has warmed up. Thin so there are 4 plants per hill. Eight to 10 plants will provide more than enough for a large family. You can trellis squash to save space. Plants grow 2 ft tall, and vines spread up to 10 ft.

Soil Requirements:

Requires fertile, slightly acid soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply mulch, grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant. Add well-composted manure.

Water Requirements:

Keep soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Water well during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle-Gro Liquid Fertilizer every two weeks.

Harvest Tips:

Protect ripening winter squash from damp ground by placing them on boards. Cut winter squash carefully from the plants to prevent damaging the vines.

I REALLY like this squash. I have planted many many varieties of squash through the years and this one is my all time favorite. It's so sweet you don't need to add sugar at all! Also great for pies, not stringy.

We have been planting Amber Cup for years, great flavor! We don't have good storage so I just bake the squash and scrape out the meat and freeze it for later.  My crew loves it mixed with brown sugar, canned milk and bake..Perfect :)
