Turnip Planting Information:

Turnips are easy to grow and are good for a winter vegetable in the South. They can be eaten raw or cooked. Turnips do not do well in hot weather. Plant early spring, 35 days before the late frost, or late fall for a winter crop. Turnips are suitable for root cellar storage. Turnips can be planted directly outdoors in soil, and can also be planted in pots indoors and transplanted outdoors. Start thinning when the plant is 4 to 6” tall. Harvest before a hard freeze, or if tops look withered or yellow in color.

Soil Requirements:

Turnips require fertile soil with compost. Apply mulch, grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant.

Water Requirements:

Keep watered during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle-Gro Liquid Fertilizer periodically.

Harvest Tips:

The best turnips are when no bigger than 3 or 4 “ in diameter. Pick them before they get any larger. Frequent freezing and thawing will ruin the Turnips, so pick before the first heavy frost.

35 days. Brassica rapa. (F1) White Lady Turnip. This early maturing plant produces good yields of 2 ½ to 3” diameter bright green turnip greens. It is a popular Japanese-style salad turnip variety prized for its smooth, milky-white, semi-round roots; mild/sweet flavor; crisp texture even when larger; and tender, dark green tops, excellent for greens. The pure white roots are tender, sweet, and delicious. You can harvest roots at any time, and they will not become woody. The leaves are virtually free of pubescence and can be used as greens. Bolt Resistant. Excellent choice for home gardens and market growers. A variety from the USA.
