It is a popular rutabaga variety, prized for its widely regarded as one of the standard or most popular rutabaga varieties for home gardens, market tables, and storage. It has a deep purple color above ground and a creamy, pale yellow color below ground, with pale yellow to golden flesh. Very sweet and flavorful. Flavor improves after frost. Excellent for roasting, boiling/mashing, soups, stews, or even raw in salads. It is an improved version of the American Purple Top Rutabaga. Stores well. Cold Tolerant. Rutabaga Planting Information:

Rutabaga does not do well in poor or clay soil, so prepare the soil by adding compost and manure. Till the soil well before planting. They thrive in cooler regions and do not like hot weather. Plant your seeds outdoors. Planting should occur as soon as the soil can be worked and 1 week after the last frost. Plant in 2 to 3 week intervals for a steady harvest until about 2 months before the first killing frost in the fall. Plants are 12" to 18" tall.

Soil Requirements:

Requires loose, fertile soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply mulch, compost, grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant.

Water Requirements:

Keep the soil uniformly moist and from drying out. Keep watered during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Periodically apply Miracle-Gro.

Harvest Tips:

Dig or pull roots when they are 3 - 5" in diameter. You can leave the roots in the ground over the winter if you cover them with heavy mulch.
