90 days. Citrullus lanatus. Open Pollinated. Yellow Belly Black Diamond Watermelon. The plant produces good yields of large 35 to 50 lb watermelons. It has very flavorful, bright red flesh. Tough rind helps the fruit from bruising. The watermelon's bottom turns yellow when ripe. Vines are rank and vigorous and help prevent sunburn. The plant has large leaves, which help prevent sunburning of watermelons. An excellent mid-season variety. Good shipper variety. Always a great seller at Farmer’s Markets. An excellent choice for home gardens, market growers, and open field production. United States Department of Agriculture, PI 629107. A variety from the USA.

Watermelon Planting Information:

Watermelons require a lot of space and a sunny location in your garden. Plant 5 to 7 seeds in a diameter outdoors in hills. Planting should occur 1 to 2 weeks after the last frost. Plants grow 1 ft tall, and vines spread up to 6 ft.

Soil Requirements:

Requires fertile soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply mulch, grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant. Add well-rotted manure and compost to soil.

Water Requirements:

Water well during dry and hot spells. Make sure plants get 1" of water per week.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle-Gro Liquid Fertilizer every two weeks.

Harvest Tips:

Protect ripening watermelons from damp ground by placing them on boards. Tap the watermelon with your knuckles, and if it sounds hollow, it's ready. Cut watermelons carefully from the plants to prevent damaging the vines.
