Purple Carrots

2006 All-America Selections Winner! 73 days. Daucus carota. (F1) Purple Haze Carrot. The plant produces sweet and tender 7 to 10" long deep purple skinned carrots with a bright orange core. Excellent fresh in salads or cooked for gourmet dishes. Makes quite a beautiful display when sliced on a relish tray. The carrot retains its color when lightly cooked; however, it loses its vibrant purple color when it is cooked longer. Add color to your favorite dish by growing yellow, white, and purple carrots. Plant seeds between May and July to prevent bolting. An excellent choice for home gardens. A variety from the USA.

Carrot Planting Information:

Carrots prefer cool, wet weather to grow in. Plant the seeds directly in the garden where the soil is finely tilled. Wet the soil before planting. Planting should take place 25 days before the last frost, or in late summer and autumn for winter and spring crops. You can have several succession plantings up until midsummer when it is too hot to grow carrots. Plants grow 12" tall.

Soil Requirements:

Requires loose, fertile, sandy soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply mulch, grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant.

Water Requirements:

Keep the soil moist to ensure germination. Water well during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle-Gro Liquid Fertilizer every two weeks.

Harvest Tips:

Pull carrots when they are mature and full color. You can leave carrots in the ground over winter by cutting off the green tops and covering them with mulch.
