65 days. Phaseolus lunatus. Open Pollinated. Early Thorogreen Lima Bean. This early-maturing dwarf plant produces heavy yields of large, 2 ½” long by ½” wide, plump, pale green lima beans. It is a popular heirloom bush lima bean variety prized for its earliness, compact growth, and tender, flavorful small "baby" lima beans. The plant does not require staking. It is a flat, thin lima bean without the meaty texture that characterizes many of its thicker cousins. This baby lima bean is excellent for soups and casseroles. Lima Bean Planting Information:

Lima beans are both bush and pole. The difference is that bush varieties grow faster, but pole varieties yield more and for a longer period of time. They are not cold hardy plants. Do not plant until the soil is warm. Lima beans have a harder time sprouting than other beans. Plant your Lima bean seeds outdoors directly in the soil, 14 days after your last frost date, and when night time temperatures are 75°F. For a quicker start, you can soak your seeds for 1 to 4 hours in warm water. If you soak the seeds too long, they will split or rot and will not germinate! Lima beans do not like soil that is too moist and require lots of room in the garden. Plants can grow 1 to 9 ft tall.

Warning: Do not plant in cold, wet soil, or you may experience poor germination!

Soil Requirements:

Requires rich, fertile soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply mulch, grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant.

Water Requirements:

Beans do not like soil that is too moist. Water during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when planting outdoors. Periodically apply Miracle-Gro.

Harvest Tips:

Pinch or cut the pods off carefully to avoid damaging the plant. Pick every few days for tender beans. Frequent harvesting also encourages plants to produce more pods.

DM – Downy Mildew

Scientific Name: Peronospora farinosa, Peronospora parasitica, Pseudoperonospora cubensis

Type: Fungus

Downy mildew is a fungal disease that affects the growth of beets, broccoli, cantaloupes & melons, cauliflower, cucumbers, spinach, Swiss chard, and watermelons. Downy Mildew is most serious for cucumbers, which can drop dead in a week and stop producing any fruit to harvest. The disease affects both seedlings and mature plants.The infected leaves are retarded in growth, turn yellow then brown, and turn downward. A white to gray color mold appears on the underside of the leaves. The leaves will wilt and eventually die. The disease can spread rapidly under favorable conditions and infect the entire field. The infected plants should be removed and burned to avoid further infestation. The disease is favorable when temperatures are 58-72 F and usually occur in early spring and autumn in cooler weather when moisture and humidity are very high. Fungicides can help manage the disease. Good air circulation and increasing space between the plants can help control and prevent the disease, so use wide plant spacing to promote drying of the leaves. The best option is to use disease resistant varieties.
