Fava Bean Planting Information:

Soak the seeds overnight in warm water. Plant the seeds outdoors directly in the garden in February and April when you plant peas. Fava beans can handle cold weather down to 20°F, but they can not handle hot summers. In the South, Fava beans do well when planted in the fall, between October and November, or in the early spring in March. Plants can grow 12 to 72" tall.

Soil Requirements:

Requires rich, fertile soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply mulch, grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant.

Water Requirements:

Keep the soil consistently moist. Water only in the morning. Water well during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when planting outdoors. Periodically apply Miracle-Gro.

Harvest Tips:

Pull up the plant when the lower pods are full and dry, and the upper pods are fully developed. Remove the beans from the pods.
