The stalks are very tall and retain flavor even when stalks are fully grown. Used in soups, stews, and salads. This variety holds well over the winter. Cold Tolerant. Also known as Lyon Leek. An excellent choice for home gardens. An 1800s heirloom variety from England.

Leek Planting Information:

The leek is like a bulb onion. It is grown for its fleshy stem. It is a mellow onion and can be substituted for any onion and asparagus recipe. Leek seeds should be planted indoors 50 to 60 days before the last frost. You can also plant seeds directly in the garden as soon as the soil can be worked. Keep free from weeds. You need long sunny days to grow large leeks. Plants grow 8 - 18" tall.

Soil Requirements:

Requires fertile soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply mulch. grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant.

Water Requirements:

Keep soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Water well during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle-Gro Liquid Fertilizer every two weeks.

Harvest Tips:

Harvest when leeks are ½" in diameter.
