1970 All-America Selections Winner! 100 days. Cucurbita moschata. Open Pollinated. Waltham Butternut Squash. This compact bush plant produces high yields of 3 to 6 lb light tan butternut squash that has a thick, straight cylindrical neck and a relatively small bulbous seed cavity at the blossom end. A popular winter squash variety, prized for its high usable flesh yield, small seed cavity, reliability, storage quality, and culinary versatility. It is one of the most widely grown and dependable butternuts for home gardens and markets. The squash has yellow-orange flesh, which is solid, dry, and very sweet. The flavor improves after 1 to 2 months of storage as starches convert to sugars. Excellent roasted, baked, steamed, pureed for soups, in risottos, pasta fillings, or any recipe calling for classic sweet butternut flavor, or microwaved. Keeps well. One of our best-selling winter squash. Vines grow 8 to 10 feet long, so leave plenty of room in your garden. A 1940s heirloom variety developed by Bob Young in Waltham, Massachusetts, that continues to set the standard for butternut squash. An excellent choice for home gardens, Farmer's Markets, and market growers. United States Department of Agriculture, NSL 73985. An heirloom variety from the USA.
