Burgess Buttercup Squash Seeds

90 days. Cucurbita maxima. Open Pollinated. Burgess Buttercup Squash. The plant produces heavy yields of 8" long, turban-shaped green squash with silvery white stripes. A popular heirloom winter squash variety, prized for its outstanding flavor, dry sweet flesh, and reliable performance. This variety is frequently praised as one of the best-tasting winter squashes. The yellow-orange flesh is very sweet, and the squash grows to 3 to 5 lbs. It has an extended shelf life and stores well. The flavor improves after a few weeks of storage. Excellent for roasting, baking, soups, purees, and pies. The flesh stays dry rather than watery when cooked. The original Buttercup type was developed by the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station in 1925 as a cross between Quality Squash and the Essex Hybrid Squash. The Burgess strain is an improved selection developed by the Burgess Seed & Plant Company. Excellent choice for home gardens, Farmer’s Markets, and market growers. Winter Squash Planting Information:

Winter Squash need warm weather to grow. It is best to plant seeds directly in the garden. Plant your seeds after the soil has warmed up. Thin so there are 4 plants per hill. Eight to 10 plants will provide more than enough for a large family. You can trellis squash to save space. Plants grow 2 ft tall, and vines spread up to 10 ft.

Soil Requirements:

Requires fertile, slightly acid soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply mulch, grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant. Add well-composted manure.

Water Requirements:

Keep soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Water well during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle-Gro Liquid Fertilizer every two weeks.

Harvest Tips:

Protect ripening winter squash from damp ground by placing them on boards. Cut winter squash carefully from the plants to prevent damaging the vines.
