Bush Bean Planting Information:

Plant your bush bean seeds outdoors directly in the garden after your last frost date. For a quicker start, you can soak your seeds for 1 to 4 hours in warm water. If you soak the seeds for too long, they will split, rot, or may not germinate! Germination is improved when soil temperature is above 65°F. Plant in 2 to 3 week intervals for a steady harvest until about 3 months before the first killing frost in the fall. Plants can grow 12 to 24" tall.

Warning: Do not plant in cold, wet soil, or you may experience poor germination!

Soil Requirements:

Requires rich, fertile soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply mulch, grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant.

Water Requirements:

Beans do not like soil that is too moist. Water during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when planting outdoors. Periodically apply Miracle-Gro.

Harvest Tips:

Pinch or cut the pods off carefully to avoid damaging the plant. Pick every few days for tender beans. Frequent harvesting also encourages plants to produce more pods.

BCMV – Bean Common Mosaic Virus

Type: Virus - Potyvirus

Bean Common Mosaic Virus is a disease that affects the growth of beans, cowpeas, peanuts, peas, and soybeans. This disease is found worldwide and lowers yield and quality by as much as 80%. Symptoms include mosaic, green vein banding, leaf curling, secondary leaf malformation, and plant stunting. The leaves are usually accompanied by blistering, distortion, and a downward curling and rolling. The virus can cause substantial crop loss. The virus is transmitted both by seeds and aphids. BCMV can be eradicated by planting only resistant varieties.

BCTV – Beet Curly Top Virus

Type: Virus - Curtovirus

Beet Curly Top Virus is a disease that affects the growth of peppers and tomatoes. Symptoms include yellowing of leaves, leaves curling upwards, and plants are severely stunted. Infected plants usually do not recover and die or remain stunted without setting peppers, or peppers that develops will ripen prematurely.The virus can cause substantial crop loss. The virus is transmitted by the beet leafhopper. The infected plants should be removed and burned to avoid further infestation. Keep the fields weed free. Placing shade cloth over plants. The best option is to use disease resistant varieties.
