Okra Planting Information:

Okra originated from Egypt and Ethiopia, where it grows wild. It is a traditional vegetable that is grown in the South. Five or six plants can produce enough for a small family. Okra will grow in almost any soil where the soil temperature is 60°F. It tolerates hot and humid summers. Plants should be grown in warm areas and receive plenty of sunlight. Okra can be grown directly in the garden, but should be started indoors if you have a short growing season. Plant your seeds indoors 30 days before transplanting in the garden. Okra is known for its poor germination rate, so plant a sufficient number of seeds. Keep weeded, but do not disturb roots. Plants can grow 2 to 8 ft tall.

Soil Requirements:

Requires fertile, slightly alkaline soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply mulch and grass clippings, or straw, around the base of the plant.

Water Requirements:

It is best if the soil dries between watering. It can tolerate drought, but will not thrive in wet conditions.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when planting outdoors. Apply Miracle-Gro every 2 weeks.

Harvest Tips:

Cut okra when pods are 2 - 4" in length, or the pods may become tough.

Hill Country Okra makes a beautiful plant, and the pods are tender and delicious.  Could easily be a background plant in a flower bed.  Here in Alabama in mid August its about 6 ft tall and going strong.  Very nice plants.

Our Hill Country Red Okra reached over 10 ft. tall in 2017, much more than the stated height of 4-6 ft. They produced well after our Clemson Spineless nearly stopped (only 5-6 ft. tall).

1988 All-America Selections Winner! 60 days. Abelmoschus esculentus. Open Pollinated. Red Burgundy Okra. The plant produces high yields of 6 to 8" long burgundy okra. It is a striking heirloom variety prized for its vibrant, deep-red (burgundy) pods, stems, and leaf veins, which contrast beautifully with green foliage and pale-yellow, hibiscus-like flowers. This variety has deep-red stems and green leaves and would be great as an ornamental plant. Pods can be harvested up to 8" long and remain tender. Great for making fried okra, soups, stews, gumbo, and casseroles. An excellent choice for home gardens and specialty market growers. Developed by Leon Robbins at Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina. A variety from the USA.
