Bamboo Planting Information:

Bamboo cane likes hot summers. Bamboo cane should be planted in specific patterns and distances, and separated by rows. Soak seeds in warm water (around 70°F to 85°F) for 24 to 48 hours to soften the seed coat before planting outdoors. Plant seeds directly in the garden. Bamboo needs heat to germinate. Plant your seeds after soil temperatures have warmed up and outdoor temperatures are 80°F or above. Bamboo cane needs warm soil to germinate. The seeds may rot and not germinate if the soil is too cold. Plant the seeds in blocks of at least 3 rows in each direction to protect stalks from damage from high winds. Plants can grow 20 to 30 ft tall. Growing bamboo from seed can be difficult, so follow the planting instructions for successful germination.

Warning: Do not plant in cold, wet soil, or you may experience poor germination!

Soil Requirements:

Requires well-drained, loose, rich soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply mulch, grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant.

Water Requirements:

Water during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use slow-release (6-month) Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Periodically apply Miracle-Gro. Side-dress with 33-0-0 plant food.

Harvest Tips:

Use a sharp knife to remove bamboo cane from stalks.
