Early Jersey Wakefield Cabbage Seeds

63 days. Brassica oleracea. Open Pollinated. Early Jersey Wakefield Cabbage. The plant produces a flavorful head of green cabbage. A popular heirloom variety prized for early maturity, compact heads, sweet flavor, and resistance to splitting. The heads average 6 to 7 inches in diameter and weigh 2 to 3 lbs. It is one of the earliest and best cabbages around. It originated from an English variety called Early Wakefield. Francis Brill of Jersey City, New Jersey, first grew and developed it in the U.S. around 1840. It became a local favorite and was introduced more widely for commercial sale, notably by Peter Henderson in the late 1860s. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was one of the most popular early cabbages in American gardens and markets. It remains widely available as an heirloom today. Excellent for salads, coleslaw, cooking, or pickling. Very reliable. Suitable for Northern gardens. Excellent choice for home gardens. United States Department of Agriculture, NSL 22991. Cabbage Planting Information:

Cabbage grows best when daytime temperatures are under 80°F. High fertility, improper water conditions, and heat can cause loose, puffy heads. Spring planting should occur as soon as the soil can be worked, 3 to 5 weeks before the last frost, and fall planting should be done around June or July. Plants can grow 6 to 12" tall.

Soil Requirements:

Requires fertile soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply mulch, grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant.

Water Requirements:

Maintain consistent moisture to prevent heads from cracking. Water only the sides of the plant, avoiding wetting any part of it.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle-Gro Liquid Fertilizer every two weeks.

Harvest Tips:

Cut heads with a sharp knife at ground level.
