50 days. Phaseolus vulgaris. Open Pollinated. Burpee Stringless Green Pod Bean. This early-maturing bush plant produces good yields of delicious 5 to 6" long stringless beans. It is a popular, classic heirloom bush bean variety prized as one of the first widely available stringless green beans. Excellent fresh flavor and great for steaming, sautéing, braising, pesto, canning, and freezing. Tender when picked young. Introduced in 1894 by W. Atlee Burpee, who obtained their stock seed from N. B. Kenney. It was claimed to be the only stringless green podded bean at the time. Excellent fresh or canned. Excellent choice for home gardens, Farmer’s Markets, and market growers. Bush Bean Planting Information:

Plant your bush bean seeds outdoors directly in the garden after your last frost date. For a quicker start, you can soak your seeds for 1 to 4 hours in warm water. If you soak the seeds for too long, they will split, rot, or may not germinate! Germination is improved when soil temperature is above 65°F. Plant in 2 to 3 week intervals for a steady harvest until about 3 months before the first killing frost in the fall. Plants can grow 12 to 24" tall.

Warning: Do not plant in cold, wet soil, or you may experience poor germination!

Soil Requirements:

Requires rich, fertile soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply mulch, grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant.

Water Requirements:

Beans do not like soil that is too moist. Water during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when planting outdoors. Periodically apply Miracle-Gro.

Harvest Tips:

Pinch or cut the pods off carefully to avoid damaging the plant. Pick every few days for tender beans. Frequent harvesting also encourages plants to produce more pods.
