Eggplant Seed Planting Information:

Eggplants do best in well-drained soil enhanced with compost and manure. They thrive in high temperature and high humidity areas. Plant your seeds indoors, 6 to 8 weeks before setting them outside. When seedlings are 4" to 6" tall, transplant them into larger pots so roots can grow properly. Grow transplants at 50 F to 70 F. Spring planting should occur 2 weeks after the last frost. Protect the plants from frost and wind. Plants will not set fruit when nighttime temperatures fall below 65 F. Plants can grow 3 ft tall.

Soil Requirements:

Requires fertile slightly acidic soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply much, grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant.

Water Requirements:

Water well during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle Gro Liquid Fertilizer every two weeks.

Side-dress plants with compost and manure.

Harvest Tips:

Cut fruit from plants with garden scissors so you don't damage the plant when they are fully mature and reach full color.

Grew 2 of the Black King Eggplants inside a greenhouse in northwest Iowa.  It gets very hot here in the summer and inside the greenhouse would easily reach over 110 degrees.  I grew them in grow bags with miracle grow raised bed soil and they produced very well.  The plants grew like crazy, handled the heat and produced a lot of really nice fruit from early in the season till October when I cleaned out the greenhouse for the winter. I've never had luck growing eggplant in the garden and was amazed how well these did a a greenhouse.  Can't say enough good things about this variety of eggplant!
