Pods are 3 ¼" long and dark green and have 3 to 4 seeds per pod. This Gourmet lima bean differs from the American lima bean varieties due to its thin skin, creamy velvety-smooth, and buttery flavor. The Garrofon lima beans are an essential element for making an authentic and original Valencian paella and chili con carne. You can now make Valencian paella anywhere in the world. Lima Bean Seed Planting Information:

Lima beans are both bush and pole. The difference is that bush varieties grow faster, but pole varieties yield more and for a longer period of time. They are not cold hardy plants. Do not plant until soil is warm. Lima beans have a harder time sprouting than other beans. Plant your Lima bean seeds outdoors directly in the soil, 14 days after your last frost date, and when night time temperatures are 75 F. For a quicker start, you can soak your seeds 1 to 4 hours in warm water. If you soak the seeds too long, they will split or rot and will not germinate! Lima beans do not like soil that is too moist and require lots of room in the garden. Plants can grow 1 to 9 ft tall.

Warning: Do not plant in cold wet soil or you may experience poor germination!

Soil Requirements:

Requires rich fertile soil in a well drained location in the garden. Apply much and grass clippings, or straw around base of plant.

Water Requirements:

Beans do not like soil that is too moist. Water during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use RootBlast, Vegetable Alive, and Slow Release Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Periodically apply Miracle Gro.

Harvest Tips:

Pinch or cut the pods off carefully to avoid damaging the plant. Pick every few days for tender beans. Frequent harvesting also encourages plant to produce more pods.
