It is a popular grass variety prized for its fast-growing characteristics, height, and thickness. It is the World’s Tallest Grass! Commonly used for privacy hedges and windbreaks due to its thick root system and dense foliage. Grow it as a privacy barrier, ornamental landscaping, animal forage, windbreaking barrier, and erosion control. Plants should be spaced several feet apart to allow for mature spread, as each clump can expand significantly over time. Proper spacing improves airflow and helps maintain strong, upright growth. Elephant grass is a warm-season grower, meaning it will die back or go dormant in colder temperatures and regrow when conditions warm. Also known as Napier Grass and Uganda Grass. Elephant Grass Planting Information:

Elephant Grass likes warm weather to germinate. Elephant Grass seeds should be planted in specific patterns and at specific distances, with rows spaced apart. Soak seeds in warm water 24 hours before planting outdoors. Plant seeds directly in the garden. Elephant Grass needs warm soil to germinate, at least 65°F. Plant your seeds after soil temperatures have warmed and outdoor temperatures are at or above 75°F. The seeds may rot and not germinate if the soil is too cold or too wet. Plant the seeds in clumps of at least 3, spaced at least 3 apart in each direction, to protect the stalks from high winds. Plants can grow 10 to 15 ft tall and up to 25 ft under ideal conditions.

Warning: Do not plant in cold, wet soil, or you may experience poor germination! Sow seeds in warm soil after the last frost!

Soil Requirements:

Requires well-drained, loose, rich soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply mulch, grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use slow-release (6-month) Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors.

Harvest Tips:

Use a sharp knife to cut the grass from the stalks so as not to disturb the roots. It is a perennial, so it will regrow in the spring.
