85 days. Cichorium endivia. Open Pollinated. Verona Red Chicory. The plant produces excellent yields of 6" round burgundy red chicory. Adds sharp flavor to salads. Used in salads or cooked as a vegetable. May also be sauteed, steamed, or grilled with meats. Colder weather will produce the best color. Cold Tolerant. Also known as Rossa di Verona Radicchio. Excellent choice for home gardens. An heirloom variety from Italy.

Radicchio Planting Information:

Radicchio can be harvested between December and April in the south. It requires a long, cool growing season. You can have successive plantings throughout the year. Plant in August for fall and winter harvest. In the South, you can plant as late as October for winter harvest. To ensure a crop, cut the plant to the ground in early fall so that the dark red heads can form. For spring planting, plant seeds 30 days before the last frost, and 70 days before the first autumn frost for a fall crop. Plants can grow 12 - 18" tall.

Soil Requirements:

Requires fertile soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply mulch and grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant.

Water Requirements:

Keep the soil consistently moist. Water well during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle-Gro Liquid Fertilizer periodically.

Harvest Tips:

You can cut leaves as you need them if you want the plant to produce more leaves, or you can cut the entire plant at ground level.
