It is a popular tomatillo variety prized for its small, cherry-sized fruits with a sweet, tropical, pineapple-like flavor that's sweeter and fruitier than standard green tomatillos. It has a fruity taste similar to pineapple. Excellent for making a wonderful salsa. The small, cherry-sized fruit turns from green to yellow gold when mature. They are surrounded by a papery husk that turns from green to brown as they ripen and splits open when they are ready to harvest. An excellent choice for home gardens. Tomatillo Planting Information:

Tomatillo plants should be grown in a warm area and receive plenty of sunlight, so choose a sunny location in the garden. Tomatillos grow very similarly to tomatoes, but grow more quickly. The fruit grows inside the husk. Relocate your plants to different parts of your garden each year to avoid diseases. Optimum temperatures for growing tomatillos are between 65 F and 85 F. Plant your seeds indoors for 3 to 6 weeks before setting them outside. When seedlings are 4" tall, transplant them into larger pots. Plants should be at least 10" tall before transplanting outdoors. Plants should be grown outdoors in shady areas for several days before transplanting. Shelter the transplants to prevent sunburn, wilting, and rain damage. Spring planting should occur when the soil is warm, at least 3 weeks after the last frost, and when temperatures remain above 70 F. You can plant early if you use water towers. Use 4 to 5 ft tall cages to protect plant branches from breaking. Plants can grow 2 to 6 ft tall.

Soil Requirements:

Requires fertile, slightly acidic soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply mulch, grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant. Work the soil thoroughly before planting. Add well-rotted manure and compost.

Water Requirements:

Keep soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Water well during dry and hot spells. Water in the morning only, on the side of the plants and not directly on the leaves.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle-Gro Liquid Fertilizer every two weeks.

Harvest Tips:

Harvest tomatillo cherries when they are fully mature, using a pair of garden scissors so you don't damage the plant. Unripe fruit has a sticky surface. Pick them as they mature to encourage new fruit to form.
