Celery Seed Planting Information:

Celery does not like hot weather and will grow best if started indoors. Plant your seeds indoors, 10 to 12 weeks before setting outside. Transplant them in the garden when plants are at least 6" tall and when soil temperature is above 55 F. Harden off before planting in the garden. Prepare garden soil before transplanting outdoors. Spring planting should occur as soon as soil can be worked. You can begin harvesting the stalks anytime after the plant has leaves. You can cut the stalks at ground level and leave roots in ground for compost. Cover plants with mulch when temperatures fall below freezing. Plants can grow 1 - 2 ft tall.

Soil Requirements:

Requires fertile soil in a well drained location in the garden. Add manure, peat moss, and compost to trenches. Apply much and grass clippings, or straw around base of plant.

Water Requirements:

Avoid over-watering transplants, or you may drown the plants. When the plants have been set outdoors and have begun to grow new shoots, water well. Celery requires a lot of water and it is best to flood irrigate the plants. Keep watered during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use RootBlast, Vegetable Alive, and Slow Release Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle Gro twice a month. Side dress plants with compost, bone meal, and seaweed every few weeks for added calcium.

Harvest Tips:

Cut entire plant at ground level with a sharp knife when stalks are 1" wide.
