1963 All-America Selections Winner! 65 days. Lactuca sativa. Open Pollinated. Buttercrunch Lettuce. The plant produces high yields of dark green butterhead lettuce. It is a popular lettuce variety that forms compact, loose, rosette-style heads and remains a home garden and market favorite. Better heat tolerance and is slower to bolt than many other butterheads, so it stays mild longer in warmer weather. It has a mild buttery flavor with no bitterness. The broad green leaves are delicious, but the best part is the heart of loosely folded leaves and thick, crisp, tender ribs. Great for salads and garnishes. Heat Tolerant. Slow to bolt. Developed by George Raleigh of Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. Suitable for greenhouse production. An excellent choice for home gardens, greenhouses, and market growers. United States Department of Agriculture, PI 536804. A variety from the USA.
